Terrific Excursions

By E.J. Ruskin

New Yorl City offers so many terra firma choices to us locals that it’s easy to forget we live on an island. Surrounded by water. With luxury cruises just a subway-, bus- or taxi-ride away.

Taking a cruise is a great way to get to a baseball game; gain fresh insight into our history; learn about our architectural treasures; or (my personal preference) provide a legitimate reason to, uh, drift through a summer afternoon.

NY Waterway offers a wide selection of fun, informative and indulgent trips, all described on their Website (nywaterway.com, or call (800) 533-3779).

Some of my favorites:

New York Historical Society History Cruise
The New York Historical Society partnered with NY Waterways to offer this cruise into the history of our city. Our waterways, waterfront development, and neighborhoods that can be seen from the boat all are discussed by a Certified Tour Guide. What could be better than bar and food service combined with entertaining and informative facts about our history – all while relaxing on the water.

90-minute cruise.
Departs from Pier 78 @ West 38th Street and 12th Avenue.
Tuesday 10 a.m. Saturday at noon.

Check out the “Original” NY Milkshake Company, located at the pier, for some delicious food to take aboard.

AIA N.Y. Architecture Cruise
Another partnered cruise, this time with the American Institute of Architects (New York Chapter), also has a Certified Tour Guide. He tells us about the architecture of our landmarks including, of course, the Statue of Liberty. Again, bar and food service is available on-board.

90-minute cruise.
Departs from Pier 78 @ West 38th Street and 12th Avenue.
Thursday and Sunday at noon.

Check out the “Original” NY Milkshake Company, as above.

City Lights Cruise
A romantic way to start an evening: watching the sunset while the city lights enhance a dazzling skyline. Food and bar service add to the appeal.

90-minute cruise.
Departs from Pier 78 @ West 38th Street and 12th Avenue.
Daily @7:30 p.m.
