morewomanSheila McKinnon lives in the most magical apartment in Rome; it is in fact the same abode where the iconic movie Roman Holiday was filmed. And perhaps because her digs have a view that seems to unfold an enchanted world, Sheila McKinnon is free to roam, photograph, and give voice to a cohort she has called Invisible Women.

In the preface to her book of photographs, by this same name, pictures that have been exhibited around the world, it reads: “Sheila McKinnon’s work is dedicated to all those tireless, capable women who since the dawn of time have played an essential role in humanity’s long journey. In these images of great formal beauty, Sheila has captured moments of women’s everyday existence, of women doing tasks that are so essential as to be taken for granted, so discreet as to be invisible.”

McKinnon was born in Canada and has spent most of her life in Italy. She has worked as a photographer and journalist for various European and North American publications. She has traveled around the world for various humanitarian organizations including UNICEF, the FAO, Africare and others.
